I experienced no difficulty whatever in procuring the number of emigrants I required, under the instructions on which I acted; the terms which these instructions enabled me to propose, were most satisfactory to them; namely-a free passage for themselves and families, and employment for one year certain, guaranteed by the Government, on their arrival in this Country. Probate on Ambrose’s estate was granted on 18 January 1825. He painted a picture of an aristocratic class gone mad with power, and with no restraints put upon them in the treatment of their tenants, ‘They have enacted laws to establish these rights and they blush not to declare these laws sacred.’ For MacLeod, legality of action did not matter; it was the morality that should be condemned. Troy always stayed on good terms with the British aristocracy in Dublin but he would not push for Catholic emancipation while penal laws were being amended.455There was a strong backlash from a large body of ‘rebel priests’ throughout the length and breadth of Ireland. Some other charges were: grossly indecent conduct, grossly improper conduct, disobedience, insolence, neglect of duty, pilfering, losing his master’s property and absconding. They contracted for a passage directly from their own homes to this country, and were thrown ashore in Glasgow, where beyond doubt they caught the disease which is raging among them; and they now have to find their way as best they can to Cape Breton and Prince Edward Island. That’s why it’s important to work hard and invent lots of new things in Ireland and fight for small languages that are dying out. The first convict ship to sail direct from Ireland to New South Wales, the Queen, arrived on the 26th of September, 1791 with 133 male convicts, 22 females and 3 children on board. Mary was tried with her sister, Ann Jones, on 11 January 1803 for stealing the following items: one pair of new Spanish leather women’s shoes, a boy’s jacket and trousers, part of a muslin petticoat, three yards of green silk, one bed quilt, one damask tablecloth, two yards of new Irish linen, three [table] napkins, one child’s frock, one Irish linen shirt, one black satin quilted petticoat, one bombazine gown, one small piece of paper, two maps and one prayer book. . Other Colbhasaich (Colonsay People) learned of the emigrants’ success and followed them to Prince Edward Island in the years ahead. Although he was placed in virtual solitary confinement, he was allowed to reside in a cottage, which was a converted stable. This is due to a specific conception of ancestry: one which is only interested in direct identification through lines of descent, one which generates hierarchies out of generations, and seeks power through purity. After his emancipation fourteen years later, he was working as a slater and plasterer in Sydney. A visit to the State Archives revealed several large sheets of paper with a list of names from the Adam Lodge, supplied by Alick Osborne on the ship’s arrival in Sydney. Many of those of lowlier station in life wished to be transported to foreign parts and they knew that to commit a minor crime was their best guarantee – even an act of stealing a handkerchief drew a sentence of a seven-year transportation to Australia. 562 Michael Foucault, Discipline and Punish: The Birth of the Prison, (New York: Vintage, 1975), p. 47. It was also hardly surprising that authorities did not want large numbers of unemployed fishing servants remaining on the island in the off-season, given that the infrastructure of law and order during the winter was skeletal. Most importantly, Arthur’s sense of ancestry and cultural identity is also heavily conditioned by this rhizomatic apprehension of the world. Few events in modern Scottish history have as strong a resonance as the Highland Clearances, eliciting images and emotions sustained and deployed by artists, writers or politicians. Death is the one who orders an equal share for all and, as for the rest of us, He will grant you a shroud and two strides of green earth. A list of the human rights denied to Irish and Scottish Celts, as far on as the late 1800s and as judged today against our own Convention of Human Rights, included – ‘a man should not be compelled to take recourse to rebellion; every person has a right to life; the dignity and worth of each person should be reaffirmed; no distinction should be made on the basis of politics or jurisdiction; no person should be held in slavery or servitude; no person should be subjected to cruel or degrading treatment; no person should be subjected to arbitrary exile; no person should be arbitrarily deprived of his home or family; everyone should have a right to nationality; everyone should have a right to marriage; everyone has a right to freedom of expression of opinion; everyone has the right to take part and to elect government; every person has the right to equal pay for equal work; every person has the right to a good-enough standard of subsistence; and every person has the right to education’. 607 For examinations of Ribbonism in Ireland, see: Tom Garvin, “Defenders, Ribbonmen and Others: Underground Political Networks in Pre-Famine Ireland,” Past and Present, no. It was left to Meagher to make a speech. the subject) in the ways described above, the notion of arborescence has immediate, indeed, obvious, appeal. 793 Robinson, P. (1984) The Plantation of Ulster: British Settlement in an Irish Landscape, 1600-1670 Dublin: Gill and MacMillan. The convicts, who were excluded from all society but their own and their keepers, became so recalcitrant that Marsden realising the impossibility of his task called it quits and turned his attention to other pursuits, namely the convicts’ children and the acquisition of land for farming, preferably by grant. Then started she home, in the night all alone. of the Fulton’. All were forced to attend Marsden’s religious services. By doing so, they took advantage of an opportunity that would enable them to stay on the land as agriculturalists without feudal ties. He was able to join the Police Force and was sworn in as a Constable in Sydney on 29 December 1810. Meetings were also held in the United States to form an ‘Irish Brigade’, which would provide military support in the forthcoming struggle. Seasonal migration from the Highlands to the Lowlands and to England has a history which long pre-dated Culloden, and continued into the 20th century.88 Permanent migration to the Lowlands occurred early in the piece too and those parts of the Highlands closest to the urbanising centres of central Scotland experienced the earliest and most prolific outflows and helped to diminish local population growth rates as early as the 1780s. 724 Coghill papers, Mitchell Library, Sydney, Item 76. 531 The map is based on the map of Lot 57 drawn by Roderick Campbell in 1860. Olrd, Ellis & Cheap 10 Mar.1820. Karl Wagner. This included removal from the ballot for the militia, if not from conscription, under the 1803 Army of Reserve Act.234 Several militia or fencible volunteers transferred to regular military service. J. Connolly, Priests and People in Pre-Famine Ireland, 1780-1845 (Dublin: Gill and Macmillan, 1982). He also railed against the new doctrine of papal infallibility. Two convicts who were ordered to drive the condemned men to the scaffold in bullock carts went on strike and received 25 lashes for their trouble. The joint owners of the Lulan were the brothers-in-law, James Carmichael and George MacKenzie, the latter also the Master of the ship, who are given due prominence by Cameron. It was not the only hollow on P.E.I. Such feelings were not universal. While the English and Irish had come in large numbers in the 1830s and 1840s, the Scots, many of whom were Gaelic speakers, had come as early as the 1770s and were the largest ethnic group at close to fifty percent of the population. A situationalist has little interest in race, ancestry or symbols as motive forces in their sense of identity. New crofts, some on rocky land and others mossy, were very difficult and unrewarding to work. The Orangemen tried to escape the “mob” by taking shelter in the house of the widow Maria Moyse; but the crowd continued to parade around the house, menacing those inside with verbal threats and pickets until the Orangemen were finally removed under police escort.625, Catholic Bishop Thomas Power criticized the government for not having banned the Orange procession, “since it threatened to provoke a breach of the peace.” The Catholic population would have been hard-pressed, he argued, to ignore the provocation of this march through territory to which they felt that they had equal claim. Relief was short lived and the more humane measures were reversed by Governors Brisbane and Darling (Merle O’Donnell, Chapter Fourteen).55 So it seems that the Scottish Enlightenment principle, that the general welfare of mankind was served by ‘the greatest happiness for the greatest number’, did not seem to travel well. Even more crucial was population increase which, in the 1810s and 1820s, accelerated in totally unprecedented velocity and scale. Religious tracts and Bibles for such of them as could read were entrusted to passengers to be distributed among them, and from a Benevolent Society a considerable quantity of oatmeal was furnished to Captain MacKenzie to aid them on their way after being landed on our shores. In the first decade of Sydney the severe shortage of food made discipline essential for the survival of the entire community. To begin with, Arthur is deeply concerned with immediate family history : the quote which opens this chapter is from the first essay in Irish Nocturnes, a meditation on family history, identity and links to place and race. In the post-Waterloo period, and into the new Pacific theatre of migration, the previous pattern was maintained but was now magnified by the competitive pressures which sharply intensified in all sectors of the Highland economy: the price of wool fell and even the sheep farmers were in strife, the weaker among them going to the wall. A reasonable assumption can be made that these respondents approved the prioritisation of an uneasy peace and the maintenance of a status quo for the sake of a longer term political gain, even at the cost of delayed Catholic emancipation. In 1994 my paternal grandmother, Laura Glover, died at the age of 94 and her home, our extended family headquarters in the country town of Sale, where she had lived since her marriage in 1923, became what Read has referred to as a ‘lost place’.787 Her house in Macarthur Street, along with a precariously balanced loft above one of its ramshackle outhouses, a landmark for passing shoppers, was among the last in the street to succumb to an expanding commercial zone. 1957. ), Memorial to the Arran Clearances Unveiled by Mrs Myrtle Cook Maxwell of New Brunswick Canada 9th May 1977, p. 69. NASA’s New Horizons mission has been en route since launch in 2006. However, the latter also contribute to the ‘culturally constituted landscape’843 as reflected for example in the vestiges of Gunai/Kurnai oral tradition and Thomas Huston’s letters home. Historical reference characters could then be Lord Selkirk, Sir John MacNeill, Colonel Gordon of Cluny and the Duke of Sutherland. Francis Humberston MacKenzie of Seaforth, without any military experience, became the first lieutenant-colonel commandant of his newly raised 78th. Jack left his mark on the home, a Californian bungalow built in readiness for his marriage, by later adding some fine features.788 A decorative plaster dome illuminated by coloured lights, and other examples of his creative, art deco carpentry reflected a flair for innovation so characteristic of his modernistic occupation: he was co-owner/manager of a chain of Gippsland cinema enterprises that provided work for his large extended family.789 Jack’s home office was next to his sons’ bedroom, a sleep-out, where they could hear him working late into the night, doing the accounts and topping up his basic education through the International University Society Reading Course. He further recommended the establishment of harsher penal stations and any weakening of this by “ill considered compassion for convicts” in the humanitarian policies of Governor Macquarie should be reported. This sense of loyalty may have derived as much from prolonged military service as from the background of the Highland soldier. There he fell into a form of crime whose frequency Nicholas pointed out some years later: namely, theft of tools from an employer. The poor everywhere were disadvantaged; emigration generally kept them out of the reckoning. A reward of £1,300, a colossal amount for the time and place, was offered, but the notices were defaced with abusive language and the drawing of an Irish harp above a falling crown. 322 The trial of the young and dashing Meagher attracted the most attention. Nest, NSW: Allen & Unwin, 2008. 5 at pp. Often there was a combination of opportunity and pressure, behind which there was frequently the threat of eviction; many of the emigrants were, however, sincerely grateful to their landlords.97 Moreover in the general blurring of categories there were obviously people who were succumbing to pressure. Queen’s Own Highlanders, 1983), pp. 615Education in Newfoundland, originally carried out by early SPGFP, Catholic, and Methodist missionaries, came under government jurisdiction with the granting of representative government in 1832. 378. In these respects Colonel Gordon was broadly typical of a class of entrepreneurial Victorian businessmen proprietors far removed from the Highland ‘landlords’ of the past. 827 McGrath, A. 712 D. Dobson, A Directory of Scots in Australasia 1788-1900, St Andrews, 1994-? 248 Anonymous, Personal Narrative, p. 177. By 1820, there had been a reduction in the number of convict deaths on the passage out to New South Wales, but some deaths occurred. Heavily attended Protestant “indignation meetings” held at Carbonear and Harbour Grace after the acquittal of Riverhead prisoners in 1885 expressed “horror” and “amazement” at these “outrageous miscarriages of justice” wrought by the “patent perjury on the part of the defence.” The trial verdicts were a “double insult to the country and the Protestant world in general.” An immediate revamping of the administration of justice was necessary “to remedy abuses and to secure Protestants . 759 W. Ullathorne, The Horrors of Transportation, originally published in Dublin, 1838; facsimile edition National Library, Canberra, 1988, p.19. The idea of ancestry as ‘roots’ has been deeply ingrained into our popular cultural awareness since Alex Haley (or at least the miniseries based on his novel). Although O’Brien looked older and desolate, Mitchel believed that he was ‘a man who cannot be crushed, bowed or broken’ as his principles were ‘anchored immovably upon his own brave heart within’.353 In spite of past ideological disagreements, their reunion was warm. 313, 1181, McIver to Loch, 20 Jun. 171 Richards, Leviathan of Wealth, 243; Devine, Great Highland Famine, 92. Seventy-two of these poor people are on their way to Prince Edward Island, where their friends and relatives are settled. Simon’s son Alexander was unable to inherit as he was still only 17 and illegitimate but he later successfully petitioned for a land grant as he had ‘lived with his father for a long time and…was solely dependent on him’. Horsburgh pointed out to Loch that, A full and impartial account of all connected with the ‘Sutherland Clearances’ may possibly ere long, in justice to those concerned, become necessary, but I venture to doubt whether the full time for making such a statement has yet arrived…it would be well to allow the question to rest for a few years, or even till the events so palpably misrepresented have become matters of History, as affecting not this county merely, but the general interest of the whole Nation.208. At least twenty four and perhaps four or five more migrants died en route or in quarantine. Fifteen years later the regulations were changed so that ‘the emigrants’ ages must not be above the ages of forty but for every child above the age of 14, an excess of 1 year will be allowed.’ John and his wife Mary had at last three children above the age of fourteen, of which two were female (Nancy 18, Eliza 15 and Robert 16) so John’s family would have qualified under the later regulations. The project therefore belongs not only to today’s Highlanders, but to everyone of Highland descent, no matter where they now reside.978. The paternalistic, segregated mission regime of Moravian missionary Friedrich August Hagenauer attempted to forge a new identity for the local indigenes, designed to alter the Aborigines’ sense of time and space. It is questionable how much of his expressed views were truly his own. Irishmen were poorly portrayed and they were thought to have brought their fate on their own heads. He does not seem much esteemed. The persistence of numbers in the 30-49 age groups despite out-migration would suggest a population boom in the early years of the century and enhanced survival among those who remained. Moyses Hill acquired a considerable part of the Kilwarlin territory from the Irish chieftain, Bryan McCrory Magennes, whose family owned it for generations. The climate cannot be exceeded in mildness. Part of the trouble was that the colonies would normally take only the young and the able, those who could be quickly inducted into the labour force. Life sentences meant that these men would be in Coghill’s employ for a minimum of eight years and he chose well, as there is no record of any of these men appearing before a magistrate for misdemeanours. Mitchel's popularity was such that many in Ireland called for an immediate uprising. Despite the fact that Colonsay was not spared the effects of the famine of 1845-48, Sir John did not even visit while on his tour of twenty seven parishes throughout the Highlands but declared nonetheless that his homeland was “one of the least stricken”.34 The islanders might have expected more from someone who had friends in high places - Sir John McNeill was a close friend of Lord Palmerston, himself a landowner in Ireland who was soon to be Prime Minister - but McNeill was the son of the Old Laird who was also high-handed. George and Ellen and their three children landed in Melbourne on 29 January, 1861. If he was captured, he feared that he would never be allowed to return to Ireland. There were hardly enough of them to be ‘bunched’. Although he recalls the event in a playful manner, as something of a victory for Ireland, the reader cannot but help think of the more recent Troubles which, as descendents of this event, have wreaked such havoc on the peace and stability of Ireland. It is not difficult to regard the alacrity with which the offers of assistance were taken up as a sign of the frustrated propensity to leave the Highlands. 369. However, “Philo-Gamma” of Conception Bay “unequivocally corroborate[d]” reports that a large number of “infatuated and misguided people” had been involved in Fenian demonstrations and added “that pikes, a la mode of those of Vinegar Hill with many modern improvement,” were being manufactured in Bay Roberts to fend off Fenian invaders.616. 31100308 3205. 337-347; Eilean Hooper-Greenhill, Museums and the Interpretation of Visual Culture, London, 2000, p. 119. It is significant that no convict was sentenced to the tread wheel by the Cawdor bench, which was seen as Major Antill’s bench and often held at this home. James did not always see eye to eye with Jane and he referred to her as ‘indolent’. First, the data showing the highly urban origins of the Scots compared with the English and especially the Irish convicts may be misleading. His funeral was greeted with jeering and insults along the processional route. The disputes with two sets of former employees, Messrs. Brown and Messrs. Buckle, Bagster and Buchanan, along with a couple of smuggling incidents for which he was fined, suggest a ruthless and opportunistic streak in Coghill, which would reappear in his later dealings with convicts. If eviction was household-selective, a reduction in average age of the population might be expected, with fewer older residents remaining by 1851.the largest absolute falls occurred in the 0-29 age-groups, this would imply self-selection by younger and more dynamic age-groups emigrating for economic reasons or that the Estate was successful in evicting younger cottars. Robinson notes the arrival in Sydney of the Louisa in 1827, one of the first ships with appreciable numbers of Scottish-tried women. In Scotland the recognition of community rights to the land largely based on cultural values rooted in the past and giving pride of place to the benefits of a collective order has not been any less important. It also has 20 acres of sown hay.’ On the beaches of Colonsay and Oronsay, men, women and children collected ‘from 120 to 160 tons of kelp in favourable years.’ Macdonald quoted from one of the farm stewards that labourers cleaned out a field of 10 acres of waste ground in 180 days, ploughed over 51 days and harrowed for 20 days. 410 O'Brien to John Martin, Letters of William Smith O'Brien to John Martin, NLI, MS. 411 Ibid., O’Brien to O’Doherty, Letters of Smith O’Brien, 16 August 1853. All were recaptured within four days of each other and sentenced to six months’ hard labour in irons and the horror of 100 lashes powered by Cuthbertson’s bloody pace. 6, 1878, 162-3 and 169-70, PANL. 89 Flinn, et al., Scottish Population History, p. 477. 610See various correspondence in “The Fenians,” GN 1/3/A, box 4, file 7/1866, PANL; see also the Newfoundlander, 12, 16, and 19 January 1865; the Public Ledger, 10, 13, and 20 January 1865; the Patriot, 17 January 1865; and the Daily News, 14 and 17 January 1865. 55, No. Lands were barely sufficient to support a family and kelping was the only way to raise rent. Mackenzie, The Book of Arran Vol. (Though there were three Murphys, two Gallachers, a Reilly, a Docherty and even one Edward Kelly convicted in Scotland. During the Civil War, Michel openly supported the Confederacy, and two of his sons were killed fighting in the Confederacy Army. 1, p. 80. At a personal level, awareness of genetic links and familiarity with family narratives bring a sense of empathy with an ancestor. Of these seven men, only two died in Ireland, the country they loved so much. 14-16; Oatts, Proud Heritage, vol. The Honourable Mr. All charges against her were quashed and she was given a free pardon. In ‘A Hole in the Fence’, page 39. But he soon appeared to be as restless there as he had been in Van Diemen’s Land. 671 W.D. 612Public Ledger, 17 and 20 January 1865, and Daily News, 17 January 1865. If ultimately the campaign to oust the Duke from his pedestal failed, another project took over and eventually succeeded. They seemed to have been no more or less likely to demand their rights and ‘extras’ than the other nationalities. Since there was no reticulated water as yet in the colony, a well with good water handy to the kitchen was also essential. The figure of forty-one convicts, however, does not reflect the true picture, as not all bench books survive. It does not seem just that this Province should be subject to the expense and annoyance which must ever result if a system is sanctioned by the imperial authorities which will permit landed proprietors or others to inundate this country with paupers.’. Still, such regulations, and others banning the erection of huts for winter residence, decidedly targeted Irish Catholics in the population and continued to do so into the early 1800s. They then left for New York where Mitchel was planning to meet his friends from 1848, including Reilly, Meagher, Dillon, O’Gorman and Doheny. By the early nineteenth century, the Beothuk were very reduced in numbers and the last known of them, Shawna Dithit, succumbed to TB in 1829.74, Carol Glover quotes Seamus Heaney, ‘it is this feeling, assenting, equable marriage between the geographical country and the country of the mind, whether that country of the mind takes its tone unconsciously from a shared oral inherited culture, or from a consciously savoured literary culture, or from both, it is this marriage that constitutes the sense of place in its richest possible manifestation’.75. His principal recommendation was emigration.162 There was indeed pressure from small tenants for financial help in emigrating from Sutherland, perhaps an indictment on the failure of the clearances to stimulate economic prosperity in the county.163 With some help from the government via the Highland and Island Emigration Society, McIver records that roughly one thousand souls emigrated in the early 1850s from Sutherland at a cost to the Duke of £7000. 207, PANL; and local newspapers such as the Harbour Grace Standard, Evening Telegram, Evening Mercury, Newfoundlander, and Patriot. Before travelling there, he wrote to his father explaining that the position would be ‘a profitable one to me, and that it will enable me to pay you visits in France next summer’. 2-3; Johnston, History of the Cameronians, Vol. It was an argument almost unanimously accepted in the crisis years of the Great Famine of the late 1840s. The Highlands was evidently part of a much wider phenomenon. 594See: Emmet Larkin, The Historical Dimensions of Irish Catholicism, The Irish-Americans Series, ed. He was 52 years old when he moved his family to live in the Braidwood district. The appointment of the first official Catholic chaplain, Phillip Connolly, in 1821 introduced a proper church-state partnership to control the Irish convicts and with the support of the British government for the post, the Catholic Church was careful not to let its patrons down. ), A Soldier of the 71st:The Journal of a Soldier of the Highland Light Infantry 1808-1815 (London: Leo Cooper, 1976), pp. 3, Editions Gallimard, 1997, pp. It concluded that ‘Emigration has helped to increase wages and has also contributed to the independence of the workers remaining. The rules adopted by me for the preservation of order, and cleanliness, when not voluntarily submitted to, were enforced by mulcting the offending parties of a portion of their rations and comforts, for a period proportioned to the offence, and I found the power that assumed by me, sufficient and ample for all salutary and necessary control over them. Ambrose led a blameless life in New South Wales, unlike fellow Irishmen in Australia who continued their revolt against the British authorities. He was informed,‘The sentence is that you, William Smith O’Brien, be taken from hence to the place from whence you came, and be thence drawn on a hurdle to the place of execution, and be there hanged by the neck until you are dead; and that afterwards your head shall be severed from your body, and your body divided into four quarters, and be disposed of as Her Majesty shall think fit. To this must also be added the increased interest in genealogy made more accessible to the layman. 313, 1524, McIver to George Loch, 22 Mar. We also issued potatoes, at the rate of six pounds per week to each adult, in addition to the rations, and the owners were compensated by the consequent saving of bread. Suspicions among neighbours remained low for quite a time but in 1849 all came out. Those who remain give out that they await only good accounts from their relations and a proper opportunity of being transported to the hemisphere.’ When the Clerk to the Speaker of the House of Commons initiated the census of 1801, he allowed that the head-count of a parish could be taken anytime between 10 March and 30 April, usually by the local schoolmaster. 956 W.M. 709 M. & A.D. Macfarlane, The Scottish Radicals: Tried and transported to Australia for Treason in 1820, 1st ed., Sydney, 1973; 2nd ed. Over the next four years he tasted a series of humiliations. Its first resident was a Skye man, Archibald McIntosh, who set up a blacksmith’s forge on the creek’s bank).836 By 1861 most of the local population lived in the hinterland; even so, Sale’s population swelled when people gathered there for social events, such as the first horticultural show (and horse races), held a week or so after the Glovers’ arrival. The Neptune spent almost six months in the Cape, awaiting orders from the government in London.338 On 13 February 1850, the Captain was told to proceed to Van Diemen’s Land and, as compensation for the hardships of the voyage, the convicts were each to receive ‘conditional pardons’, all, that is, except for Mitchel.339 The Neptune arrived in Derwent, near Hobart on 6 April. In 1956, Manning Clark signalled a major revision of what had become the acceptable face of convicts, undermining Wood’s assertion that they were ‘village Hampdens’. 20 Devine, T.M. 267 Captain W. R. King, Campaigning in Kaffirland (London: Saunders and Otley, 1853), pp. His sample of about twelve hundred convicts was indeed representative (‘equivalent to a random sample’) as he said677, but the large number of ‘no responses’ casts doubt on some of his conclusions, particularly those concerning numbers with prior convictions, where he guessed about the forty four per cent with ‘no response’.
